A wildfire near Mount Bromo in Indonesia that began on August 3 has been fully extinguished after burning 550 hectares, according to reports from local authorities. The fire was officially declared out on Sunday. However, new hotspots have emerged in areas surrounding the Mount Bromo caldera, covering roughly 20 hectares.

Gatot Soebroto, head of the local disaster mitigation agency, confirmed the detection of these new fires. More than 120 personnel, including firefighters and support teams, have been deployed to the region to combat these active hotspots. Three water-bombing helicopters and drones are also being utilized in the firefighting efforts.

The Indonesian authorities are concerned about the heightened risk of further fires this dry season, compounded by intensifying El Nino conditions. The Forestry Ministry has stated that the ongoing dry weather significantly increases the likelihood of additional wildfires in the area.
