Multi-storey building collapses in Nairobi's Eastleigh district
A 13-storey building under construction collapsed in Nairobi's busy Eastleigh commercial area, with many feared trapped under the rubble.

A multi-storey building collapsed in the Eastleigh district of Nairobi during the afternoon. The structure, which was under construction at the time of the collapse, came down along a busy commercial street in an area typically crowded with traders and residents. Videos shared online showed a dramatic crash accompanied by large clouds of dust as the building fell.
Many people are feared to be trapped beneath the rubble following the collapse. Rescue operations began at the site, with teams working to reach those potentially caught under the debris.
Police deployed tear gas at the scene to disperse curious onlookers and looters, according to reports, in order to clear access for rescue workers. Rescue operations continued into the evening hours as emergency responders worked at the site.

According to officials, the building had not been issued an occupation certificate as required before use. However, the ground floor of the structure was reportedly in use at the time of the collapse, raising questions about why the building had been allowed to operate without the necessary clearance.
The Red Cross dispatched a team to the scene in response to the incident. The area where the collapse occurred is described as a busy business and residential district of the capital.
