According to the military government of Niger, soldiers attacked the main international airport in Niamey, the capital, during an attempted coup. Witnesses reported that the attacks occurred in the early hours of Saturday, August 29, and that the soldiers advanced towards the presidential palace, briefly taking control of the national broadcaster.
The situation in the country remains unstable, but the military government claims it is regaining control after the failed coup attempt, as reported by Notícias ao Minuto. Russia has also expressed solidarity with Niger following the events.
