Nigeria's index patient in the current Ebola outbreak and her husband, both Swiss citizens, arrived in Switzerland on Monday aboard a medical evacuation flight. The woman is receiving treatment at Geneva University Hospitals, while her husband, considered a close contact, is in isolation at University Hospital Zurich, according to the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health. Nigeria's health minister confirmed the evacuation on his official social media account.

The patient, a Ugandan-born woman based in Abuja, was being treated for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which originated in an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Nigeria had confirmed its first Ebola case in more than a decade six days before the evacuation took place.

The health minister noted that while the patient's condition had improved significantly and laboratory test results showed clinical progress, she could still be infectious. He stressed that strict public health protocols remain in place despite these improvements.

Nigeria's disease control agency said the federal government approved the transfer following consultations with the health ministry. The country is sustaining surveillance operations, with 52 people who had been in contact with the woman continuing to be monitored.

According to the World Health Organisation's Regional Director for Africa, Nigeria currently has no active Ebola cases following the evacuation of the confirmed patient and her husband. The WHO clarified that under International Health Regulations, a country can be declared Ebola-free only after a 42-day countdown following the last confirmed case testing negative twice or, in this situation, after the evacuation of the confirmed case, followed by heightened surveillance.

Nigeria's health minister indicated that the country could declare the Ebola outbreak over as early as December 7 if no further confirmed or probable cases are detected following the evacuation. He urged Nigerians to remain calm, cooperate with contact-tracing teams and follow updates from the disease control centre and health ministry.
