One quarter of students in Coimbra consider dropping out due to costs
A survey reveals that high costs impact the retention of students in higher education in Coimbra.

A survey conducted by the Academic Association of Coimbra (AAC) indicates that around a quarter of students, or 25%, within the academic community have considered the possibility of dropping out due to high expenses. This research was conducted online in August and received 1,039 responses.
According to the collected data, two-thirds of respondents report paying 300 euros or more for housing accommodations. Affordability and housing costs have been noted as significant factors influencing many students' decisions.
Additionally, more than half of the students surveyed stated that issues related to the cost and availability of housing also affected their choice of educational institution.

The study suggests that rising rental prices may lead to increased dropout rates among students, raising concerns about the sustainability of higher education in the city.
The results of the survey have sparked significant discussion, as the high cost of living in the city directly affects students' retention in academia.
The implications of these findings could be profound, not only for students but also for the institution itself, which may find it challenging to retain students due to these financial circumstances.
