Paraguayan President Santiago Peña resigns amid political crisis
Santiago Peña, the president of Paraguay, announced his resignation, citing the need to maintain stability in a statement published on social media.

Paraguayan President Santiago Peña submitted his resignation on Thursday, November 5, 2026, amid a political crisis and discussions regarding impeachment. In the statement released, Peña apologized to the Paraguayan people and affirmed that 'no position can be above the welfare of Paraguay.'
The resignation letter was addressed to the President of Congress, Basilio Núñez. On the same day, the Senate of Paraguay had already begun reviewing Peña's resignation request in a session convened due to the crisis caused by the collapse of Ueno Bank.
The session deliberating the president's resignation was suspended after government deputies left, emptying the chamber and complicating the continuation of the vote. As a result, the impeachment process may proceed if the resignation is refused.

The following morning, the Senate postponed the impeachment discussion session, intending to ensure Peña's presence, who had announced his defense and requested a 72-hour delay to prepare his arguments.
However, on Friday, the Senate rejected the request for postponement and decided to resume the impeachment process, stipulating that Peña should present his defense in a short timeframe.
Hours after the impeachment was approved by Congress, the Public Ministry of Paraguay ordered Peña's immediate detention. Reports indicate that police were mobilized in front of the former president's residence, where he is expected to remain under house arrest. The details of the detention order were widely covered by Paraguayan media.
