President approves new railway licensing regime after accident
Following the derailment of the Glória elevator in 2025, a new regime for railway licensing and oversight has been approved.

The President of the Republic, António José Seguro, has promulgated a new legal framework regulating the licensing, maintenance, and oversight of railway transport in Portugal. This measure comes in the wake of the derailment of the Glória elevator, which occurred in 2025.
The new legislation covers various modes of transport, including subways, trams, and historical elevators and funiculars. Responsibility for licensing will rest with the Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes (IMT), while oversight and safety will be ensured by the Autoridade de Mobilidade e Transportes (AMT).
The decision was communicated through a statement published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic, where details of the new regime are presented. The aim is to enhance safety and efficiency in the operation of these transport services.

Additionally, André Ventura, a politician, reiterated his demand for the resignation of the Minister of Internal Administration concerning the accident and the new regulations, expressing concerns about the management of public safety in the context of transportation.
This new licensing regime must be implemented to ensure high safety standards across all included transport systems, reflecting the authorities' concern to prevent future incidents. In summary, the promulgation of this legislation marks a response from the authorities to the need for improved oversight in the sector.
