Prosecution Highlights Delays in Sara Duterte Impeachment Trial

The prosecution panel's spokesman, Atty. Benjamin Tolosa Jr., stated that Vice President Sara Duterte's defense team is contributing to delays in her impeachment trial. According to Tolosa, the defense has refused to stipulate common evidence, which is causing the trial to slow down.

On August 14, the defense opted to meticulously check thousands of documents, further prolonging the process. Tolosa commented on this decision, suggesting that it may have been made whether deliberately or unintentionally.

During a press briefing, Tolosa responded to statements made by the defense’s deputy spokesperson, Justin Gular. Gular had declared that the defense would only focus on specified information, which may lead to more prolonged proceedings.

The prosecution has criticized Duterte for her remarks about the impeachment court, describing the proceedings as being 'marred by bending the law.' They contend that such comments could be subject to sub judice and contempt rules, indicating the seriousness of her accusations against the court's integrity.

Tolosa reiterated that while litigants have the right to criticize judicial proceedings, they should not compromise the integrity of the court itself. This exchange adds to the ongoing tensions surrounding the impeachment trial as both sides continue to navigate procedural challenges.
