A protest was organized by the Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) and various allied faith groups against an upcoming event featuring Mohan Bhagwat at Madison Square Garden. The protest was held under the banner "No Platform for Hate" and included representatives from Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Dalit, and interfaith organizations.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani publicly opposed Bhagwat's event, emphasizing values of pluralism and secularism that he attributed to his family's perspective on Indian society. He highlighted the importance of belonging for all individuals in India.

Bhagwat is expected to address approximately 5,000 members of the Indian diaspora on August 29 as part of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's centenary-year global outreach programme. This event has raised concerns among various groups.

Despite his opposition to the event, Mamdani expressed uncertainty about the city's authority to cancel a private gathering. His recent statements were made during a news conference where he reiterated his stance against the rally.

The opposition to Bhagwat's event underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding perceptions of Hindu nationalism and the representation of diverse communities within the Indian diaspora.
