Vladimir Putin met with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek. This was the first personal encounter between the two leaders since the parliamentary elections in Armenia in June. The agreement between the two heads of state focused on Armenia's future alignment with the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

During the meeting, Putin emphasized that Russia is Armenia's main partner in trade and economic matters. He pointed out that Armenia's gross domestic product (GDP) has tripled since its membership in the EAEU. Additionally, exports to EAEU countries have increased tenfold.

A central topic of the discussions was Armenia's aspiration to join the European Union, as well as the potential impacts of this decision on bilateral relations with the Russian Federation. Pashinyan informed Putin about Armenia's stance regarding EU integration.

Putin urged Pashinyan to make a swift decision between the EU and the EAEU. The situation between Russia and Armenia has become tense in recent months, underscoring the urgency of the issue. Such a dilemma could have far-reaching consequences for Armenia's geostrategic position and its partnership with Russia.

The talks took place within a political context characterized by Armenia's growing interest in Western structures. It remains to be seen how Armenia's positioning will affect its existing relationship with Russia. Planned steps towards EU integration are thus on the agenda for future negotiations.
