A significant painting by Piet Mondrian, titled Composition III, will be auctioned at Christie’s in London on October 14, 2023. This artwork from 1920 is one of the few remaining pieces by Mondrian in private hands.
Christie’s anticipates that Composition III will fetch between £20 and £30 million (approximately €23 to €35 million). According to sources from De Telegraaf, this would make it the most expensive item of the auction season.

Composition III was painted in 1920, a period when Mondrian transitioned to his famous abstract style, known as neoplasticism. This established him as a pioneer of modern art.
The painting is part of a group of eight works by the artist. Mondrian is globally recognized for his influential contributions to the art world and is often regarded as one of the most important painters of the 20th century.
The auction at Christie’s will take place at a time when the value of museum-quality artworks continues to rise, which will undoubtedly increase interest in this particular painting.
