The rector of UGent, Petra De Sutter, defends the disciplinary procedure against Nathan Cofnas, which has also sparked international criticism with multiple open letters.

Petra De Sutter, rector of Ghent University (UGent), has defended the disciplinary procedure against American researcher Nathan Cofnas. The procedure has resulted in significant criticism on social media, including international reactions.
An open letter opposing potential sanctions against Cofnas has gathered over 800 signatures, including from academics at prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Oxford, and Cambridge. In response, another open letter supporting the suspension of Cofnas has received more than 1,700 signatures.
UGent has imposed remote work on Cofnas for a period of three months. During this time, he is not allowed to engage in teaching activities, according to an announcement on the university's website.

In her statement, De Sutter emphasized that the Cofnas matter is a personnel issue and that the university is adhering to its procedures. She expressed her responsibility in managing the case and the associated disciplinary procedure.
In addition to defending the procedure, De Sutter also indicated that UGent wishes to reevaluate its selection and hiring processes in light of this situation. She believes there is room for improvement within the institutional practices.
The ongoing discussion surrounding the case has led the university to focus not only on the disciplinary procedure itself but also on broader institutional practices and standards. Reactions continue to be divided, both within and outside the academic community.
