According to a study from Heilbronn University, over seven million vehicles in Germany have been using regional registration plates since the reform in 2012. These plates have become very popular among drivers as they create a personal connection to their home regions.

Currently, there are already numerous municipal license plates, such as ZIG for Ziegenhain in Hesse or TP for Templin in Brandenburg. The new reform could allow even more municipalities to issue their own registration plates.

The revived vehicle registration plates not only provide drivers with a sense of home on their cars but also foster identification with their regions. However, the exact details of the proposed reform are still unclear, and discussions at the political level are ongoing.
