On Thursday, a Romanian F-16 fighter jet destroyed a maritime drone several hundred meters from the Neptun Deep gas project, located in the Black Sea. According to the Romanian Minister of Defense, the drone was loaded with explosives.

Romanian President Nicusor Dan strongly condemned the incident, labeling it an "escalation of these irresponsible incidents," which he attributed to Russia. This event has highlighted increasing tensions in a region already marked by ongoing events in Ukraine.

The destruction of the maritime drone comes amid a context where Romania, as a NATO member, is closely monitoring incursions and potential threats in its territorial waters. The incident has raised concerns about the security of energy infrastructure in the Black Sea, crucial for the region.

Other reports indicate that the downed drone may have direct ties to intimidation operations orchestrated by Russia, according to several sources, including the Romanian Ministry of Defense. This interpretation has been supported by official statements, emphasizing the need for increased vigilance.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also reacted to the incident, referring to an "intensifying campaign of threats" and highlighting that such drone incursions are becoming increasingly frequent in Europe due to geopolitical tensions.

While Romanian authorities are taking active defense measures, they reaffirm their commitment to securing their maritime spaces against potential threats, all while monitoring the developments in the regional situation.
