Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Russian drones attacked a commercial vessel in the Black Sea on Monday, leading to a fire and the eventual sinking of the ship. The incident occurred off the coast of Romania, approximately 30 nautical miles south of Sfantul Gheorghe in Tulcea County, according to reports from officials.

Following the drone strike, Romanian authorities confirmed that two crew members died in the incident. A total of 11 people were rescued from the sinking vessel, but the search has continued for any additional missing crew members. This attack is reportedly the first of its kind in Bulgarian waters, raising concerns over maritime security in the region.

Earlier on the same day, Kyiv reported that Russian drones targeted a bridge over the Dnipro River, resulting in injuries to two individuals during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to Ukraine. This incident exacerbated fears about safety in conflict zones as international officials meet in the area.

As part of its defensive measures, the Ukrainian military announced that it is utilizing AI-directed robotic machine gun turrets against more sophisticated Russian drones. These new systems have reportedly been effective in intercepting advanced drone models near Kyiv.

Reports indicate that the drone threat continues to escalate, with Ukrainian forces acknowledging a decline in their interception rate from 90% to 55% against these faster drones. The implementation of AI-assisted weaponry is part of broader efforts to enhance defenses amid ongoing conflicts.

The recent incidents highlight the increasing dangers posed by drone warfare in the Black Sea, raising broader implications about the strategic stability of the region. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as military activities intensify.
