The Socialist Party's National Political Commission met on Wednesday evening and expressed unanimity on the abstention position the party will take on the general vote for the 2027 State Budget. André Moz Caldas, a Socialist party official, announced that the meeting reached this total consensus, justifying the decision on grounds of the need for stability.

José Luís Carneiro, responsible for the party's budget strategy, presented the position to members of the National Political Commission. According to reports, he encountered no opposition during interventions from other participants, who aligned themselves with the approach of enabling the government proposal through abstention.

The decision allows the Government to secure budget approval in the general vote, counting on votes from the executive and its supporting parties as well as Socialist abstention. This commitment thus enables the proposal without needing affirmative votes from the PS.

However, according to Moz Caldas, maintaining this stance in the specialised committee phase is not guaranteed. This means the party may alter its position in subsequent votes on specific budget articles, thus preserving room for future negotiations or changes in positioning as parliamentary work develops.
