Jorge Bravo presented a study analyzing the financial situation of the Caixa Geral de Aposentações (CGA) and social security in Portugal. The report concludes that the combined balance of these two systems has been consistently negative, raising concerns about the sustainability of pensions in the future.

The study emphasizes the importance of examining the social security pension system alongside the CGA, as the interrelations between them can significantly impact the financial health of public pensions.

In contrast, a working group proposes alternatives to mitigate this negative balance, including the creation of professional pension plans with automatic enrollment. These plans aim to complement public pensions and provide workers with additional savings options for retirement.

Furthermore, the report suggests implementing retirement savings accounts and consumption savings accounts as ways to enhance financial security in old age. The proposal even includes the possibility of converting one's own home into income.

The APRE and MURPI expressed their opposition to including the CGA balance in social security, stating that this merger may not be the most effective solution to the financial problems faced by both systems.

These discussions occur in a context of increasing pressures on the pension system, exacerbated by forecasts that social security could show a negative balance by 2040. The challenges posed require an in-depth debate on reform and savings policies in Portugal.
