Sulfuric acid leak at Am Power in Pittem under control, homes evacuated
A sulfuric acid leak in Pittem, West Flanders, has led to the evacuation of several homes. The fire brigade has taken control of the situation.

On Tuesday afternoon, a sulfuric acid leak occurred at the biogas and compost company Am Power in Pittem. The leak happened when a pipe was struck during demolition work, reports VRT NWS.
Dozens of fire trucks from various stations arrived on the scene to manage the situation. As a precaution, residents of three nearby homes were evacuated, and a 100-meter perimeter was established around the incident, according to reports from Het Laatste Nieuws.
Mayor Denis Fraeyman (cd&v) stated that the fire brigade is capable of containing the leak. For now, there is no danger to the surrounding area, he reports.
Emergency services remain on-site to monitor the ongoing situation. The exact extent of the leak is still unclear.
