The Tamil Nadu Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution urging the central government to recognise Tamil as the principal language of the Madras High Court. This move aims to make legal proceedings accessible in Tamil, the official language of the state.

According to reports, the resolution will call for the creation of a framework ensuring that all judgments, decrees, and judicial orders are available in Tamil. This initiative is seen as an effort to reinforce the classical status of the language in legal settings.

Chief Minister Vijay is set to introduce this resolution, which aligns with similar attempts made by the assembly in 2006 to obtain such recognition. The new proposal reportedly aims to utilise technology to facilitate these legal changes.

The resolution cites Article 348(2) of the Constitution, which provides a mechanism for the Governor of a state, with the President's approval, to authorise the use of the state's official language in High Court proceedings.

This legislative push underscores a growing demand for the use of Tamil in official and legal domains, reflecting the state's commitment to promoting its language within judicial processes.
