Teuteberg criticizes East German identity as a business model

Linda Teuteberg, Vice Chair of the FDP, has criticized East German identity as a political business model. In her statement, she references historical contexts and emphasizes that East Germans primarily saw themselves as Germans in a divided state before reunification.

Teuteberg explains that it was only later that political movements such as the PDS and the AfD established a resentment-driven politics. In her view, this approach fosters separation between East and West Germans, arising from the fact that East German identity was constructed retrospectively.

On the occasion of the upcoming 65th anniversary of the Berlin Wall's construction, Teuteberg states that it will take at least another decade to overcome the repercussions of the division. At the same time, she warns of political forces that may be interested in perpetuating the divide.
