On October 7, 2023, the third anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel will be observed. This assault, carried out by fighters from the Islamist organization, resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people and the kidnapping of more than 250 others, who were taken to Gaza. The attack also triggered a conflict known as the Gaza War.

Chancellor Merz, in a statement on this day, remembered the victims of the terrorist attack and expressed hope that the pain and wounds caused by these actions could heal. Merz reaffirmed Germany's support for Israel while calling for peace in the region.

In Israel, numerous memorial events are taking place, showcasing the deep sorrow surrounding the events of October 7, 2020. In Tel Aviv, an estimated 50,000 people gathered to honor the victims and express their grief. Coverage of the anniversary is met with a wide range of reactions in Germany. The attack triggered a wave of concern among the German public, which has also led to increasing complexities in German-Israeli relations. Critics argue that Israel's response in the Gaza Strip has created tensions with Germany.

At the same time, many people in Israel express disappointment three years after the devastating events regarding the response of their own authorities and the international community to the aftermath of the attack. This mix of grief and disappointment shapes the public sentiment in Israel on the anniversary.

The events of October 7, 2020, and the subsequent developments remain vivid in the collective memory of Israel. The anniversary is seen not only as a moment of remembrance but also as an occasion for deeper reflections on the current and future challenges in the region. In the shadow of the struggle for peace and stability, the question of a solution for both sides remains unresolved.
