U.S. President Donald Trump has delayed the announced 50 percent tariffs on certain Canadian products at the last minute. According to Trump, the implementation of the import fees has been postponed for three days to give more time for discussions regarding the Keystone XL oil pipeline project. He made this announcement in a statement on his platform Truth Social.

The tariffs were set to take effect at midnight Washington time and would have affected goods worth a total of $20 billion, including wine, hockey sticks, and cement. The postponement follows negotiations between the U.S. and Canada that apparently led to an agreement that now needs to be finalized.

Previously, Trump had announced the impending tariffs to exert pressure on the Canadian side. However, less than two hours before the planned implementation, a turn of events prompted both sides to use the deadline to engage in further discussions.

According to multiple sources, the U.S. government signaled a de-escalation amid the ongoing trade dispute. The talks concerning the Keystone XL project are at the center of the negotiations, as Trump wants to link the resolution of trade conflicts to progress on the pipeline project.

The tariffs have been viewed by various sources and media as a significant measure in the ongoing trade conflict between the U.S. and Canada. Despite the postponement, the dispute between the two countries remains, and it continues to be closely monitored.

While the Keystone XL project has faced much criticism and controversy over the past few years, the temporary agreement could bring new momentum to the talks. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the coming days and whether a final agreement can be reached between both countries.
