Trump threatens Switzerland with loss of elite status

During ongoing tariff negotiations, US President Donald Trump has threatened Switzerland with the loss of its elite country status. He stated that he could easily ensure that Switzerland no longer held this status with just a stroke of a pen. This remark came in the context of his efforts to eliminate the $39 billion trade deficit with Switzerland.

Trump highlighted the differences in interest rates between the US and Switzerland as grounds for his criticism. This occurred during a video interview in which he also mentioned other so-called elite countries. He made clear that he would no longer need to import Swiss watches if he deemed it necessary to achieve his goals in the trade conflict.

Switzerland reached a provisional tariff agreement with the US in November; however, negotiations for a final agreement are still ongoing. In February, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump's tariffs were unlawful, leading to a new legal basis upon which the US has now imposed tariffs.
