Turkey has issued an international arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The decision was announced on Friday as part of an investigation into the detention conditions of activists involved in the flotilla to Gaza, which was intercepted by Israel in May, resulting in the arrest of around 430 people.

The Turkish government accused Netanyahu of genocide related to the interception of the flotilla, which aimed to draw attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza. The Turkish Minister of Justice made the statement referencing Turkey's ongoing criticism of Israel's military response, especially following the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023.

In response to the warrant, Netanyahu referred to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as an 'anti-Semitic dictator'. The Israeli Prime Minister's office vowed to continue taking a strong stance against Turkey's attempts to destabilize the region, and reports indicate that Netanyahu remarked that Israel's security would not be compromised by these actions.

The scope of the accusations against Netanyahu includes crimes against humanity, genocide, aggravated deprivation of liberty, and torture. President Erdogan has been a vocal critic of the Israeli government, often making strong statements regarding Israel's actions in Gaza.

This new development comes at a time of heightened tensions between Israel and Turkey, particularly in the context of the war in Gaza and Israel's military response to Hamas attacks. The relationship between the two countries has been strained for many years, exacerbated by diverging positions on the Palestinian conflict.

It remains unclear how Interpol will respond to the request for international detention, and whether Netanyahu will face further legal consequences. The case is being closely monitored given the implications of the accusations and the response from Israeli authorities.
