Two trains collide south of Madrid, killing at least 30 people
A collision between two trains near Toledo in central Spain on Wednesday morning has left at least 30 people dead and many others injured, authorities say.

The accident occurred Wednesday morning shortly before 9 a.m. on the Spanish railway line connecting Madrid to Andalusia. According to a spokesman for Spanish emergency services contacted by AFP, the collision happened at 8:54 a.m. between two trains, one operated by private company Yrio and the other by national carrier Renfe. The accident took place near Toledo, approximately 150 kilometres south of Madrid, close to the locality of Urda in Castilla-La Mancha.
Regional authorities told AFP that the death toll stood at least 30, a figure repeated by the Spanish press. An initial count had first reported at least ten victims. However, regional authorities cautioned that the number of fatalities could rise in the coming hours. Multiple rescue teams were dispatched urgently to the scene of the disaster.
According to an account by a journalist who was on one of the trains and reported by the Spanish press, passengers were thrown and ejected by the impact. The accident also resulted in numerous injuries.

The causes of the collision had not yet been established at the time of initial reports.
The accident comes less than a year after a previous railway disaster in Adamuz in Andalusia, which shocked the country. In response to this tragedy, several dozen sporting events scheduled for Wednesday were postponed, while Spanish sports paid tribute to the victims of the accident.
