US court imposes $567 million fine on Meta for child protection failures

A court in the US state of New Mexico has imposed a fine of $567 million on Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. This decision is based on allegations of inadequate child protection related to the company's platforms.

In addition to the fine, Meta is required to establish a therapy fund for affected children. New usage restrictions will also take effect in New Mexico, stipulating that children may spend a maximum of 90 hours per week on Facebook and Instagram and should not receive push notifications during the night. Meta announced plans to appeal the ruling.
