US-South Korea Military Exercises Begin
President Trump announces a significant reduction in military maneuvers, deemed costly and hostile towards Pyongyang.

The joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea have officially begun and will run until August 27. This exercise, called 'Ulchi Freedom Shield' (UFS), is annual and involves multidomain operations to enhance the readiness and capabilities of allied forces, addressing realistic threats related to modern warfare.
Before the maneuvers commenced, US President Donald Trump announced on Truth that he has ordered a significant reduction of the exercises. He described these operations as costly and stated that they send an 'inappropriate and hostile' message to North Korea.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has been tasked with implementing this reduction. Trump emphasized the need to consider the costs of the maneuvers and the policy they may influence in relations with Pyongyang.
The exercises represent a longstanding tradition among the two allies, aimed at strengthening military cooperation amid increasing tensions in the region. However, Trump's position on reducing the maneuvers marks a shift in how the United States approaches these activities.
