US States File Lawsuit Against Meta Over Child Social Media Addiction Claims
A coalition of states is suing Meta, claiming the social media giant designed harmful, addictive products for young users.

More than half of the US states have initiated a lawsuit against Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, alleging that the company intentionally engineered its products to be addictive, particularly targeting young individuals. The trial began on Tuesday in federal court located in Oakland, California.
According to The Guardian, the states contend that Meta's social media platforms have caused significant harm to children, drawing them into harmful usage patterns through designed addiction mechanisms. The lawsuit is described as unprecedented in its scale and focus.
Deutsche Welle reported that among the plaintiffs are four states specifically seeking damages and urging for modifications to how the company's applications operate, aiming to mitigate their impact on younger users.
In the backdrop of this legal proceeding, concerns have been raised by figures like Dame Rachel de Souza, the Children’s Commissioner, regarding the influence of social media on youth, particularly in terms of exposure to extremism and violence. The commissioner has called for enhanced safeguarding measures for children affected by these influences.
