Villena Museum closed indefinitely following theft of its treasure
The Civil Guard is investigating the assault on a valuable Bronze Age collection valued at five million euros.

The Villena Museum has closed indefinitely while an investigation is underway into the theft of its most significant treasure, a heritage collection from the Bronze Age. The Civil Guard has initiated an investigation to locate at least three hooded individuals involved in the recent assault, which has left the museum without the most valuable piece of its collection, appraised at five million euros.
In light of a wave of thefts in museums, the General Directorate of Fine Arts had requested all museum institutions to provide a report on their security measures. This comes amid growing concerns over the protection of artworks and cultural heritage in the country.
The theft is being registered as a concerning incident, considering that the collection in question is one of the most valuable Bronze Age assemblages in Europe. Authorities are working to clarify the facts and recover the lost treasure, which is highly valued for its historical and cultural significance.

The museum was recently remodeled in 2024, which heightened its profile prior to the incident. However, it now faces a critical situation following the theft, frustrating the experience of visitors and the display of local cultural heritage.
The Civil Guard continues its efforts to investigate this crime, while the museum remains closed until further notice, with no specific date for reopening set by the authorities.
