German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met for the first time bilaterally with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in New York. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the UN General Debate and was the first high-level meeting between the two countries since the onset of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Wadephul urged Lavrov to abandon the "dangerous path of escalation" towards Germany, Europe, and NATO. He reiterated a stance that aligns with the ongoing conflicts between Russia and the West.

The talks lasted about 20 minutes and covered various topics, including the war in Ukraine. A report related to the German delegation emphasized that, despite the conversation, there was no fundamental consensus between the two representatives.

According to a source from the German side, the principled disagreements between Wadephul and Lavrov persisted, with no agreement in sight.

Conversely, Lavrov openly questioned the usefulness of the discussions, further underscoring the intractable situation between the two countries. This suggests that despite diplomatic efforts, no rapprochement could be achieved.

The meeting is considered significant as it temporarily opened communication channels between the chief diplomats of both countries, yet did not result in concrete progress or changes in the political landscape.
