In Algeria, at least 12 people have lost their lives due to wildfires affecting several provinces in the northeast of the country. Authorities reported that the fires intensified in a single day, resulting in at least 54 injuries, with six people hospitalized in critical condition.

The fires occurred amidst a severe heatwave gripping the region, leading to an increase in the number of recorded blazes. On Wednesday alone, 154 fires were reported in different areas of Algeria, according to data from the national emergency agency.

Many of the victims have been located in three coastal provinces situated east of the capital, Algiers. The total number of ongoing fires and the evacuation of residents have raised concerns among authorities about safety in the affected areas.

The fires have encroached on residential zones, prompting a swift response from emergency services, which are closely monitoring the situation and conducting necessary evacuations. Authorities also highlighted that dozens of residents had to leave their homes due to the proximity of the flames.

According to Algeria's Ministry of Interior and Civil Protection, the wildfires have resulted not only in fatalities but also in significant damage to property and the environment. Containment efforts are ongoing to control the fires and prevent new disasters.

Authorities continue to investigate the causes of the fires and assess the damage inflicted, as local communities face the destructive effects of the flames amidst adverse weather conditions.
