Zamboanga City School Shooter Confirmed Dead, Investigation Ongoing
The alleged shooter of Ateneo de Zamboanga University has died, prompting investigations into the incident and the motives behind it.
According to Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla, the alleged shooter involved in the incident at Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School has died on Tuesday morning. The shooter was identified as a Grade 9 student who reportedly entered the school and began firing indiscriminately, injuring a Grade 10 student. The confirmation of the shooter's death was reported by the Philippine Daily Inquirer on August 18, 2026.
In relation to the incident, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) has relieved the shooter’s father from his position as the district commander at the Port of Zamboanga. BOC Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno confirmed this decision, reflecting the serious nature of the situation. The relief from duty was reported by multiple sources, including The Philippine Star and the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara addressed speculation surrounding the shooter, stating that there was no evidence to support claims that the student was bullied or depressed prior to the shooting. On August 19, he emphasized that such narratives are unfounded, providing clarity on the context in which the incident occurred.
Interior Secretary Remulla also mentioned that the shooter entered the school using his father's vehicle, which allegedly allowed him to bypass security measures in place. Remulla indicated that the father had inadvertently left a gun bag in the car that the student accessed.
Currently, the investigation is ongoing, and Secretary Remulla stated that it is too early to determine the motive behind the shooting.
