Starting from September 1, numerous short-term rentals in Zürich, particularly illegal business apartments, will be prohibited. Owners must rent their apartments through regular channels or face fines. The city aims to strategically transform short-term rentals back into residential housing with this new ban.

To enforce the ban, the city of Zürich has established a five-member team that will handle complaints and monitor violations of the regulations. The additional positions are expected to cost around 650,000 Swiss francs annually to ensure compliance with the new rules and to identify illegal rentals.

The city is requiring providers of short-term rental accommodations to submit building applications to legalize their offers. These measures are part of the city's efforts to address the challenges of the housing market in Zürich and improve the situation regarding housing availability.
