A magnitude 7.2 earthquake shakes southern Peru
A powerful quake has occurred in Ayacucho, with no immediate reports of casualties.

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake has shaken the Andean region of Ayacucho in southern Peru, according to the report from the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP). The quake struck at 1:00 PM local time and had a depth of 108 kilometers. Its epicenter was located 35 kilometers from Cora Cora, in a district of the Parinacochas province, approximately 791 kilometers east of Lima.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude of the tremor was recorded at 6.7, while the IGP reported it as 7.2. The discrepancies in the data reflect differences in measurement methods used by the involved institutions, but the widely cited magnitude of 7.2 has been reported in most media.
Despite the intensity of the quake, no casualties or significant damage have been reported so far. Local authorities are continuing to gather information and assess the situation in the affected areas.

Initial images and videos of the seismic event show rockfalls, particularly in Coracora, where an intensity of III-IV has been measured on the Mercalli scale. Social media has played a key role in disseminating these initial reports.
While municipal and national authorities are working to evaluate the impact, the community is awaiting further information regarding the condition of infrastructure and the local population. Emergency services are on alert for potential aftershocks and other incidents.
The event occurs in a region known for its seismic activity, and experts from the IGP have urged the public to stay informed about safety recommendations during and after an earthquake.
