Abelardo de la Espriella was sworn in as Colombia's new president. The ceremony took place on Friday, August 7, in Cali, rather than the usual venue in the capital Bogotá, and was accompanied by an army battalion. Espriella is regarded as an unwavering representative of the political right and won the election in the last runoff in June.

In his inaugural speech, Espriella announced his intention to wage a determined battle against drug gangs and guerrilla groups active in Colombia. He aims to bring about a shift in the country's existing security policy and promised a 'new era' for the nation. Espriella emphasized that tackling drug trafficking will be one of his top priorities.

Former Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori congratulated Espriella on his inauguration but was unable to attend the official ceremony. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Espá, represented Peru at the celebration.

Espriella, who refers to himself as 'El Tigre,' is known for his close ties to the former U.S. administration under Donald Trump, which he seeks to strengthen. This raises questions about the future international relations of Colombia, as his predecessor, Gustavo Petro, was the country's first leftist president.

The swearing-in of Espriella may also have implications for the domestic political landscape. He leads a right-wing bloc known for its stringent views on social and economic reforms. Several prominent political figures and international guests, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino, were also in attendance.

Colombia's political direction is now influenced by Espriella's ambitious plans, which have so far shaped the country's political landscape. He has assured that he will take all necessary measures to ensure public safety and to boost agricultural production levels.
