José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, President of the Assembly of the Republic, dismissed the allegations from the Livre party regarding a possible conflict of interest that would prevent André Ventura, leader of Chega, from chairing the parliamentary inquiry into Minister Luís Neves.

According to information from the Lusa agency, Aguiar-Branco's position was expressed in a dispatch obtained by the agency. He concluded that the elements presented by Livre did not demonstrate the existence of a relevant conflict of interest.

The Livre party had requested a formal review to investigate whether a conflict of interest obstructed Ventura in his role leading the inquiry committee.

Furthermore, Livre stated that it does not recognize Aguiar-Branco's authority to decide on the matter. The party argued that Ventura is unfit to lead the investigation into Luís Neves' mandates at the Judiciary Police.

The issue emerged amid developments related to Ventura's actions in Parliament, including criticisms of Prime Minister António Costa, and a testimony that Ventura is expected to provide in writing for an inquiry opened by the Public Ministry.

The situation continues to spark debates in the political arena, with Livre insisting on the need to refer the case to the Commission on Transparency and the Statute of Deputies, a request that Aguiar-Branco rejected.
