Aguiar-Branco rejects Chega inquiry commission into Luís Neves

The President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, rejected a request from the Chega party to establish an inquiry commission into Luís Neves's management at the Polícia Judiciária. The decision was announced after a motion of censure presented by Chega against the Government was defeated in plenary.

In contrast, Aguiar-Branco approved the request from the Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party, which also called for the establishment of an inquiry commission. This request will still need to be put to a vote in Parliament and will require a majority to be approved.

In response to the rejection of Chega's request, the party leader, André Ventura, accused the President of the Assembly of the Republic, claiming that Aguiar-Branco was protecting the 'political system'.

Ventura requested a meeting with Aguiar-Branco to discuss how to modify Chega's proposal to make it acceptable, without changing its political nature. The leader of Chega sought strategies to advance the request despite its rejection.

In addition to Ventura's statements, there is frustration over how the opposition is being managed in the Assembly. Chega sought a communication channel to attempt to influence the outcome of the situation.

In this context, the rejection of Chega coincides with a potential acceptance and voting on other inquiry proposals, heightening tensions among the various parties represented in Parliament.
