Ambush on BARMM Chief Minister's Convoy Sparks Widespread Condemnation
The convoy of BARMM Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua was ambushed in Maguindanao del Norte; he was unharmed. A probe has been ordered amid growing security concerns.
On Saturday afternoon, the convoy of Abdulraof Macacua, interim Chief Minister of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), was ambushed in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte. Macacua was returning to Cotabato City after attending an event hosted by the Bangsamoro Federalist Party (BFP). Fortunately, he emerged unscathed from the assault, as confirmed by a member of his party.
The BFP condemned the ambush, labeling it a 'cowardly act'. In their statement, they emphasized that this incident represents a significant threat not only to the life of the Chief Minister but also to the stability of the governance in the region, which is preparing for its first parliamentary elections on September 14.
In response to the incident, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered an investigation into the ambush and called for enhanced security measures in the area. He expressed his disapproval of the attack and recognized the need to secure the region in the upcoming election period.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has also taken action, with chairperson George Erwin Garcia instructing the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to identify those responsible for the ambush. This directive aims to ensure safety and order during the electoral process.
Additionally, the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) expressed disdain for the attack on Macacua and his convoy. The office highlighted the need to address safety concerns for political figures in the Bangsamoro region amidst the ongoing preparations for the elections.
The ambush has raised alarm within political circles, prompting discussions about violence and security in the region. As authorities investigate the incident, the focus remains on ensuring a safe electoral environment as Bangsamoro prepares to elect its parliamentary representatives later this year.
