András Baka nominated as the new president of Hungary

In Hungary, the ruling Tisza party has nominated András Baka as the new president. Baka, the former president of the Hungarian Supreme Court, was dismissed in 2011 by then-Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

The vote on Baka's appointment will take place on Tuesday in parliament. The government, led by Prime Minister Magyar, holds an absolute majority, increasing the likelihood of Baka's appointment.

The choice of 73-year-old Baka followed a secret vote within the Tisza party's faction. This step marks the first time since the regime change that a candidate with this background has been put forward.

In a statement, the Tisza party expressed its satisfaction with this development and highlighted Baka's experience as the former head of the Supreme Court as an advantage for his candidacy.

Baka has previously served as a judge and head of the Supreme Court, but his career came to an abrupt end during Orbán's premiership, making his nomination notable.

The decision to nominate him comes at a time of political changes, during which the role of the judiciary and its independence in Hungarian politics are often under scrutiny.
