Asian tiger mosquito detected in Guimarães as potential transmitter of dengue and Zika
A potentially dengue and Zika-transmitting mosquito, Aedes albopictus, has been detected in Guimarães, but there are no confirmed cases of the diseases in the area.
The Local Health Unit of Alto Ave confirmed the detection of the Aedes albopictus mosquito, also known as the Asian tiger mosquito, in the municipality of Guimarães.
Local health officials clarified that the presence of this mosquito does not imply that there is transmission of associated diseases, such as dengue and Zika.
To date, no cases of disease in the municipality have been identified that can be attributed to this species of mosquito.
Health authorities emphasize the importance of vigilance, although there is no immediate cause for alarm.
The presence of Aedes albopictus has been reported in several regions that favor its proliferation, but current conditions in Guimarães do not indicate a risk of transmission.
