At least ten people have died after two trains collided in central Spain on Wednesday morning, Spain's regional authorities confirmed. The crash occurred in Toledo province, part of the Castilla-La Mancha region. A high-speed train slammed into the rear of another train that had stopped, according to multiple reports. The collision derailed two carriages.

Esther Padilla, spokeswoman for the Castilla-La Mancha region, said authorities could confirm ten deaths but cautioned that the number would "surely rise". Local media reported that the two trains were travelling in the same direction when the collision occurred.

Spain's state rail infrastructure operator ADIF confirmed the crash took place Wednesday morning and identified the incident as a rear-end collision between two trains. The accident involved the high-speed line connecting Madrid and Seville. According to reports, one of the trains may have stopped before the collision happened.

Rail services between Madrid and the southern Andalusia region were suspended following the crash. ADIF also halted service between Madrid and Ciudad Real. Authorities did not immediately specify when normal operations would resume.

The crash prompted contact between regional officials and the national transport authorities. Esther Padilla said she remained in constant contact with Spain's Minister of Transport regarding the incident. Local authorities also reported that many people beyond those killed were feared injured in the collision.

The precise circumstances of how the trains came to be at the point of collision remained unclear from initial reports, with officials still investigating the cause of the accident.
