Atletico Madrid is reportedly in discussions regarding a transfer for Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero. This comes as Romero is expected to leave Spurs this summer, having expressed his desire to move on from the club.

Sources indicate that Atletico's interest in Romero is serious, as they explore options to strengthen their defense during the transfer window. Romero has been a key figure at Tottenham but has not shied away from indicating his wishes for a new challenge in his career.

Tottenham has previously rebuffed advances from Arsenal for the Argentina international. The club's stance on keeping Romero appears to have shifted as they engage in discussions with Atletico Madrid.

Romero had been a transfer target for Inter earlier, with reports of a potential deal worth around £35 million. However, that deal has not materialized, leading to renewed interest from Atletico.

In addition to the negotiations surrounding Romero, Tottenham is reportedly close to agreeing on a new five-year contract for defender Micky van de Ven. This indicates that the club may be planning for a future that involves significant changes to its squad.

Diego Simeone, the Atletico Madrid manager, is keen to reinforce his lineup, and acquiring Romero would add to the team's defensive depth while addressing their tactical needs for the coming season.
