Austria's foreign ministry is expelling four Russian diplomats from the country. According to the ministry, the measure is based on findings by Austrian security authorities. Three of the diplomats were accredited to the Russian embassy, while one person was employed by the Russian delegation for military security and arms control at the OSCE in the arms control department.

Vienna accuses the representatives of the Russian Federation of engaging in activities incompatible with their diplomatic status. News magazine profil had reported on the planned expulsion before the foreign ministry announced the measure to news agency APA on Friday.

Austria's defense ministry had previously warned soldiers and federal armed forces employees against attempted contact by agents. This points to a broader context of security concerns underlying the expulsion.

Austrian authorities have not specified the exact nature of the activities they are accusing the diplomats of. The expulsion is being carried out through diplomatic channels by the foreign ministry.

Russia announced after Austria's notification that it would respond to the expulsion. No timeline for a counteraction was given.
