An avalanche occurred at the base camp of Himlung Himal in Nepal, which stands at 7,126 meters, during severe weather early on Sunday. This natural disaster has resulted in at least two fatalities and at least ten individuals reported missing, primarily consisting of climbers and support staff who were at the camp preparing for an upcoming ascent.

Local authorities confirmed that the bodies of two guides have been recovered, while the search efforts continue for the missing individuals. Reports indicate that nine climbers and 13 support staff were sheltering in a tent that was buried by the avalanche. The Nepal National Mountain Guide Association has also stated that the search operation is hindered by adverse weather conditions in the area.

Rescue teams are mobilized and have two helicopters on standby, but access to the site has remained problematic due to the challenging weather conditions, which make it difficult to conduct air operations and reach the base camp safely. Therefore, ground searches have become the primary means of recovery, although these efforts have been slowed down by snow and severe conditions in the mountainous region.

According to reports, the rescue operations commenced soon after the avalanche struck, with teams searching diligently for survivors. However, as of the latest updates, the harsh weather has continued to impede their progress, leading to concerns about the safety of both the climbers and the rescuers.

Multiple news outlets have reported diverging numbers regarding the individuals missing in the aftermath of the avalanche. While some sources indicate that ten people are unaccounted for, others mention as many as 14 individuals. This discrepancy highlights the challenges facing rescue coordinators in accurately assessing the situation amid difficult conditions.

Authorities are continuing their efforts to locate those missing and provide aid to any survivors. The situation remains dynamic, and officials are monitoring the weather closely to adjust rescue operations as conditions permit. The Himlung Himal mountain, located near the Chinese border, is often noted for requiring special permits for helicopter flights, complicating swift rescue efforts.
