Protests in Bangladesh's garment sector have intensified, leading to the establishment of a wage board aimed at reviewing workers' salaries. This decision follows demonstrations that have disrupted factory operations and escalated into violent clashes between workers and police.

Workers have been demanding a minimum monthly wage of $245, significantly higher than their current earnings, citing increasing costs of food, housing, transport, and healthcare as the driving factors behind their protests. Thousands of workers have participated in demonstrations in key industrial areas, including Dhaka and Gazipur, as inflation continues to rise.

Violent incidents have been reported during the protests, with workers allegedly vandalizing factories and attacking police outposts with stones. Clashes have led to major disruptions, including the blocking of significant roads with barricades, which has impacted transportation in the affected regions.

The protests began over the weekend and escalated into significant unrest, prompting police to respond with tear gas and sound grenades to disperse demonstrators. Some reports indicate that major roads were obstructed as workers sought to voice their concerns over their wages more forcefully.

The formation of the wage board resulted from discussions with workers' representatives and industry leaders, aimed at addressing the grievances that have fueled the unrest. Despite the establishment of this board, protests have continued, with demonstrators remaining adamant about their demands for higher wages.

As of now, while some factories have reopened, the situation remains tense, with ongoing protests indicating that workers are committed to pursuing their demands amid rising living costs and persistent inflation pressures.
