BCI Withdraws Enrolment Freeze for NALSAR Graduates After Controversy
The BCI initially froze enrolment for NALSAR's 2026 graduates amid issues over CJI Surya Kant's participation in their convocation, but later retracted the decision.
The Bar Council of India (BCI) temporarily halted the enrolment of graduates from the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) for the year 2026. This decision followed a dispute regarding the planned attendance of Chief Justice Surya Kant at the university's convocation. Students at NALSAR expressed opposition to his participation, referencing comments he made during proceedings related to police actions against NEET protesters in Delhi.
Shortly after the enrolment freeze was announced, the BCI withdrew the decision, allowing all 2026 graduates to proceed with their enrolment. The BCI has requested a factual report from NALSAR regarding individuals allegedly involved in organizing a campaign against CJI Kant's attendance at the event.
In response to the BCI's actions, Chief Justice Surya Kant criticized the council, questioning its role in the matter. He stated that the top court would not allow any coercive measures against NALSAR students and administrators and demanded an affidavit explaining the BCI's circulars.
