Bolsonaro loses election and flees to United States
Brazilian senator Flávio Bolsonaro departed for the United States with his family after losing the presidential election to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Flávio Bolsonaro lost Sunday's presidential election to sitting president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The right-wing senator initially refused to acknowledge his defeat. Within hours of the result, he was reportedly issued a travel ban and ordered to surrender his passport. The measures were imposed because he is under suspicion of money laundering.
Despite the restrictions, Bolsonaro departed Brazil on Monday, two days after the election. He travelled to the United States with his wife and two daughters, according to allies of the senator speaking to CNN Brasil. A U.S. official confirmed to news agency Reuters that Bolsonaro junior was en route to the country by aircraft.

The American government plans to grant Bolsonaro and his family visas. News agencies Reuters and Associated Press report this based on statements from senior U.S. officials. According to Brazilian media, he has since arrived in the United States.
President Lula da Silva responded to his opponent's departure. According to available reports, he called Bolsonaro's exit shameful. The senator left the country while facing investigations into corruption and money laundering.
