Brazil sues Discord over failure to protect minors
The Brazilian government demands 500 million reais in damages following the suicide of a 13-year-old girl, linking the situation to protection failures by the Discord platform.

The Brazilian government has filed a public civil lawsuit against the platform Discord, seeking 500 million reais, approximately 83 million euros, in collective moral damages. The action follows the suicide of a 13-year-old girl who was a user of the platform.
According to the Advocate General's Office, the lawsuit was initiated due to the failure of negotiations with the company, which refused to sign a conduct agreement. The action holds the platform responsible for issues related to the protection of children and adolescents, an area that has been under scrutiny in Brazil.
The National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) had already taken previous measures, including suspending Discord's live broadcasting feature in the country, following the tragic event.

The lawsuit highlights, among other issues, the failures in age verification for Discord users, a critical point raised by Brazilian authorities regarding the protection of minors on digital platforms.
The public civil action reflects a growing concern in Brazil about the online safety of children and adolescents, intensified by tragic incidents like this one. Discussions about the responsibility of digital platforms in ensuring a safe environment remain a relevant issue in the public sphere.
The Brazilian government hopes that the action will not only result in financial compensation but also lead to improvements in the protection policies for minors implemented by Discord and other similar platforms.
