Discord, the popular chat and video platform, has suspended its livestreaming capability in Brazil. This decision comes after the suicide of a thirteen-year-old girl, who was reportedly encouraged by other users during a livestream to take her own life.

The National Data Protection Authority of Brazil, known as ANPD, decided last week that Discord was not taking sufficient measures to protect children and young people from dangerous situations. This finding led to a formal call for the suspension of the livestream function, as well as video calling and other interactive features.

Discord's founder, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, confirmed the implementation of these measures in a blog post. He noted that the platform's 'screen sharing' and 'video calling' features for Brazilian users have been halted immediately. This step aims to ensure the safety of young users and to pressure the platform to act more responsibly.

The girl's suicide has sparked significant public outrage and increased criticism of how Discord handles its users, particularly younger ones. Many users and parents have urged for stricter responsibilities from social media platforms.

The ANPD has played an active role in ensuring the protection of younger users on digital platforms, and the recent incident has highlighted the vulnerability of youth in online environments. This incident has led to a broader public debate about the responsibilities of tech companies and their policies regarding the protection of minors.

Discord's decision to suspend the livestream feature in Brazil reflects a response to these recent developments and the concerns for user safety. The suspension of these functions underscores the necessity for platforms to adequately respond to serious incidents affecting their community.
