The National Data Protection Agency (ANPD) has imposed a fine of R$ 153.7 million on ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, following an administrative process that investigated failures in the protection of children and adolescents' data. The decision was published in the Official Gazette.

The process identified five violations concerning the handling of personal data, indicating that the platform did not prevent minors from accessing TikTok nor adequately protect their information. This situation led the ANPD to demand corrective measures from the company, including the deletion of data collected improperly.

In addition to the fine, the ANPD approved a compliance plan presented by ByteDance, aimed at strengthening the security of data for minor users of the platform. This plan has become a condition for the company to continue operating in Brazil.

The case is part of an increase in regulation concerning major technology platforms in Brazil, with the government seeking to ensure the protection of citizens' personal data, especially for those underage.

On the international stage, Brazil has aligned itself with other nations intensifying oversight on data protection on social networks, reflecting global concerns about online privacy.

The fine imposed by the ANPD is considered one of the largest levied against a social media platform in the country, underscoring the seriousness with which Brazilian authorities address data protection issues.
